Ways to lower the energy consumption in your home

Ways to reduce your water heater's energy consumption

When you’re looking to reduce your water heater’s energy consumption, the most dramatic way to do this is to replace your old heater. If it’s not in your budget to purchase an eco-friendly water heater, don’t stress. I will explain other ways to lower your water energy consumption.

Turn Down the Tank’s Thermostat

For every 10 degrees you turn it down, you’ll save 3% to 5% on your bill. Most water heaters arrive at your home preset at 140 degrees. The Energy Department recommends households lower it to 120 degrees. This temperature is high enough for your needs. If the thermostat on your water heater doesn’t have a numbered gauge, put it midway between the “low” and “medium” marks. Wait a day, and then measure the tap temperature and adjust if necessary.

Insulate Exposed Hot-Water Pipes

By insulating your hot water pipes, water will arrive at the faucet 2 to 4 degrees warmer. This means your water will heat up faster, thus saving energy, water and money.

After you insulate the hot water pipes, wrap your tank with an insulating blanket. It’s a cheap and easy way to reduce costs.

Drain the Sediment

Tanks naturally build up sediment. This reduces the efficiency. When you drain the tank, it will keep it running efficiently and it’s easy to do. Most manufacturers recommend draining the tank once or twice a year. The Department of Energy recommends you drain less water more often; a quart every three months.

Use Less Hot Water

The easiest way to cut hot water costs is to use less of it. A family of four showering five minutes a day uses 700 gallons of water each week. This is a three-year supply of drinking water for one person. Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators and you’ll cut your hot water consumption by 25% to 60%. This same family of four using low-flow fixtures can save 14,000 gallons of water a year. On your dishwasher, be sure to use the “economy” setting and stop pre-washing. Newer dishwashers can handle a dirty dish. Be sure to scrape what’s left into a trash or compost bin, and then load into the dishwasher.
