Should I use drain cleaning solutions to unclog my drain?

Reasons to Avoid Chemical Drain Cleaning Solutions to Unclog Your Drain

For several decades, many homeowners have reached for chemical drain cleaning solutions as a quick fix for clogged drains. These solutions are, after all, easy to find and relatively inexpensive. But did you know that these agents actually do more harm than good? For this reason is is better to deal with these issues with the use of professional drain cleaning.

To start with, the harsh fumes emitted from the thick plastic bottles are harmful to the upper respiratory tract, especially in small children. As with any liquid chemical agent, there is always the potential risk for splash backs that can lead to chemical skin burns, devastating eye injuries and accidental ingestion.

At first glance, your pipes may seem strong and invincible; however, chemical drain cleaners leave behind a hard-to-wash-away residue that can corrode pipes over time. This corrosion can lead to small holes and even breakage, depending on the severity of the damage. These chemicals are especially corrosive to older pipes that are already in a compromised state.

At the first sign of a slowed drain, consider hiring a professional plumber who can solve the problem the first time around rather relying on a quick fix that will only yield temporary results. Plumbers use two types of drain cleaning methods. The most traditional method is through the use of a plumbing auger and the second is through a more modern approach known as "hydro jetting."

Also known as a plumbers snake, a plumbing auger is a long, bendable steel cable with spaces at one end that are designed to latch onto clogs. The auger is fed down the drain where it attaches to the clog, allowing the plumber to rotate the auger until the clog is broken up into small pieces that can be flushed down the drain.

In contrast, hydro jetting uses high-speed, reverse water jets that can successfully flush away all traces of dirt, grease and sediment at the impressive rate of 1,500 to 4,000 pounds per minute. Your drains will be left sparkling clean and free of harmful fumes.
