Should I hire a plumber to help me remodel?

Plumbing Jobs That You Should Not Attempt On Your Own

The garbage disposal is jammed! Water is dripping from a pipe in the basement! And not only will that toilet not stop running, it's making some very strange noises! It would seem that it's time to call in the calvary, or rather, a local plumbing company. But they can be so expensive, and the problem doesn't seem that bad, right? With the right tools and attitude, can't you fix that pesky problem yourself?

The questions that you really should be asking yourself are,"Is this a very minor problem that can be easily corrected by tightening a washer?" "Or am I about to risk my personal safety and property by attempting this?" Below are some plumbing scenarios in which "yes" answers the second question.

Installing water heaters and clothes washers: They're not just heavy, the installation of such devices also often involves installing gas lines. If these items are not connected properly, the results can be catastrophic. Licensed professionals should be the only ones doing this particular task.

Severe drain clogs: You've followed the instructions on the package of unclogger to the letter. No luck! Should you try another brand? "Snake" the clog through the pipe? Flush it out with high pressure air or water?

It can be dangerous both to human and plumbing system safety to continue with DIY clog removal if the clog is persistent. "Liquid helpers" contain chemicals that are highly corrosive to household pipes. Their toxic effects apply to humans as well. Never mix more than one type of "unclogger", or use more than the instructed amount. The result could well be a lethal cloud of gas. And because a non professional often can't tell how far a clog extends, DIY snaking often results in a badly damaged plumbing system.

Moving pipes and drains: This job involves precise recalibration of piping to make sure everything is lined up correctly, and in most cases, pipe welding as well. As with installing water heaters and washing machines, this is a job that should be done by licensed professionals to avoid personal injury and property damage.
